Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

At Royal Senji, we know that bringing a Basenji into your life is a big decision. Whether you’re new to the breed or a seasoned dog owner, we want to make the adoption process as smooth as possible. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions to help guide you on this exciting journey.

1. What is the adoption process like at Royal Senji?

Our adoption process is designed to ensure that each puppy finds a loving, responsible home. Here’s how it works:

📌 Initial Inquiry: Start by reaching out to us with your interest.

📌 Application & Interview: We’ll ask about your experience, lifestyle, and what you’re looking for in a Basenji.

📌 Approval & Reservation: Once approved, you can place a deposit to reserve a puppy.

📌 Puppy Selection: When the puppies are ready, you’ll choose your new companion.

📌 Final Adoption: Pick-up or arranged transport, along with a detailed care package.

For full details, check out our Adoption Process page.

2. Do you require a deposit to reserve a puppy?

Yes, a non-refundable deposit is required to secure your puppy. This ensures a commitment from the adopter and helps us plan for their care. The deposit is applied toward the final adoption fee.

3. What does the adoption fee include?

Our adoption fees cover:

Health checks & vaccinations

Microchipping

Initial deworming treatments

Starter kit (food, toys, and a blanket with the mother’s scent)

Your adoption fee helps us provide high-quality care, socialization, and veterinary attention for each puppy before they go home.

4. Are your Basenji puppies health-tested?

Absolutely! All of our breeding dogs undergo comprehensive health screenings to ensure they are free of genetic conditions common to Basenjis. Our puppies also receive regular vet check-ups before going to their new families.

5. Can I visit the puppies before adopting?

We love meeting potential adopters! If you’re local, we encourage in-person visits. If you’re farther away, we offer virtual meet-and-greets with detailed profiles, photos, and videos of each puppy.

6. What should I expect when bringing my Basenji puppy home?

Bringing home a Basenji is exciting but requires preparation! Here’s what to expect:

🏡 Energy & Curiosity: Puppy-proof your home to keep them safe.

🛏 Crate Training: A cozy crate helps with house training and provides security.

🍽 Routine: Establish a consistent schedule for feeding, potty breaks, and playtime.

We’ll provide resources to help you transition smoothly!

7. What is a Basenji’s temperament like?

Basenjis are:

🐕 Independent & Intelligent – They love to problem-solve but may have a stubborn streak.

🧼 Clean & Odorless – They groom themselves like cats and rarely have a “doggy” smell.

🎶 Barkless but Vocal – Instead of barking, they “yodel” or “baroo” when excited.

👨‍👩‍👧 Loyal but Reserved – They bond deeply with their families but may be shy with strangers.

8. Do Basenjis need a lot of exercise?

Yes! Basenjis are energetic dogs that need daily activity.

🏃 Exercise: At least 30–60 minutes of walks, playtime, or structured activities.

🧠 Mental Stimulation: Puzzle toys, scent work, and training exercises help keep their sharp minds engaged.

Without enough exercise, they can become bored and mischievous!

9. Are Basenjis good with children and other pets?

👶 With Kids: Basenjis can be great with children when properly socialized. However, they do best with respectful kids who understand dog boundaries.

🐾 With Other Pets: They get along with dogs but have a strong prey drive, so supervision is needed around cats and small animals.

Early socialization is key!

10. What kind of grooming do Basenjis need?

Basenjis are low-maintenance when it comes to grooming.

🖌 Brushing: Once a week is enough to keep their coat healthy.

Nail Trimming: Regular trims prevent discomfort.

👂 Ear Cleaning: Check ears occasionally, especially after outdoor adventures.

They keep themselves remarkably clean—almost like cats!

11. Are Basenjis prone to any health issues?

Like all breeds, Basenjis can be predisposed to certain conditions, including:

🩺 Fanconi Syndrome – A kidney disorder (genetic testing helps prevent it).

👀 Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) – Can lead to vision loss over time.

🦴 Hip Dysplasia – Though less common, it’s something to monitor.

We only breed from health-tested parents to reduce these risks. Regular vet visits help keep your Basenji healthy!

12. Do Basenjis bark?

Nope! Basenjis are known as the “barkless dog”—but that doesn’t mean they’re silent.

🔊 They Yodel! Expect to hear cute “baroos” and playful growls instead of barks.

13. What kind of training does a Basenji need?

Training a Basenji requires patience and consistency.

Positive Reinforcement: Reward-based training works best.

🚫 No Harsh Corrections: They don’t respond well to negative reinforcement.

🐾 Crate Training & Leash Training: Both are highly recommended.

Early obedience training helps shape a well-mannered, happy dog.
